Morgan Johnson Quamina – Scribbly

Scribbly draws embroidery patterns straight onto fabric, so a hand embroiderer can skip tracing and transfer paper. Load a file, clamp the hoop, and it draws. Nothing to install.

It was the final product for 2.009, MIT’s product engineering capstone, built by a team of more than fifteen over a semester. I was Product Form lead, responsible for the physical design of the machine.

The hard part was never the form itself. Several subsystems wanted the same interior volume, each team had a good reason, and I had no authority over any of them. What worked was making the tradeoff visible early — showing each team what their ask cost the others in the same drawing, so the argument happened over a shared model instead of over email. We shipped on time.
