Morgan Johnson Quamina – Make/Shift

Make/Shift is a proposal structure for a design competition. The competition asked entrants to use scrap wood left over from a cancelled project — black locust, a hardwood that outperforms standard framing lumber and resists rot.

Rather than cut the salvaged stock down to standard sizes, the system works from the lengths that already exist, so the structure takes its shape from what the inventory allows.

I worked on this with Kiley Feickert and Caitlin Mueller as a UROP in spring 2023. My part was rapid prototyping: building the jigs that let us assemble a section of the structure on campus.
